August 7th


David Buckner
47 years old
Buckner was killed and three other victims were wounded in a shooting in Ada Park on the Far South Side Saturday night. At about 8 p.m., police found him fatally shot in his back in the 11200 block of South Ada Street. He was dead on the scene. Additionally, a 37-year-old man suffered a gunshot wound to his leg, a 19-year-old man got a graze wound to his neck and a 22-year-old woman was shot in her thigh. They were taken to local hospitals and were all treated and released. The incident occurred in the park when two groups began shooting at each other.


Marshall Bennett
21 years old
At about 12:47 a.m., Bennett was walking on the street in the 5500 block of South Union Avenue in the South Side Englewood neighborhood when he was shot multiple times. He was pronounced dead at 1:39 a.m. at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital.

August 6th


Cesar Rosales
41 years old
At 5:37 p.m., police responded to a person shot in the 1300 block of North Pulaski Road in the Humboldt Park neighborhood. Two people had been arguing in a parking lot at a car wash at that location about a half hour earlier when one left and returned with a gun. The man that was fatally shot was an employee at the car wash. The victim was shot in the chest and taken to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where he later died.

August 5th


Dionte Young
24 years old
At about 6:40 p.m. on Thursday evening, Young was walking on the 8800 block of South Hermitage Avenue on the South Side, just a few houses down from where he lived, when he was approached from behind by an unknown gunman and shot in the back of the neck. He suffered a gunshot wound to his head and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 9:01 p.m.

August 6th (1)

Tufan Muhammed
25 years old
At 12:05 a.m., Muhammed was fatally shot while running from his attacker early this morning in the 7800 block of South Cornell Avenue on the Far South Side. He was chased in an alley by another man believed to be 20 to 25 years old. The suspect fled in a vehicle south on Cornell in what may have been a white Chevrolet Lumis. Muhammed suffered multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body. He was pronounced dead at 1:10 a.m. at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

Steven Bell
25 years old
Bell who was found shot in the head Wednesday afternoon in the South Shore neighborhood has died from his injuries. Police responded to the 7400 block of South Kingston Avenue a little after 5 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon where they found him. He was pronounced dead at 5:52 p.m. today at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

James Evans
70 years old
A man was found stabbed to death this morning inside a residence in the South Side's West Englewood neighborhood. The body was found about 11 a.m. in the residence in the 7000 block of South Hermitage Avenue. A homicide investigation was under way after the victim's body was found with multiple stab wounds.

Andre Williams
31 years old
A man was found shot to death late this afternoon in the Englewood neighborhood on the city's South Side. Police were notified just before 6 p.m. that the victim had been discovered on the 6900 block of South Wallace Street. Neighbors near the shooting scene said they heard as many as 19 gunshots. Several men, including the victim, were hanging out under a viaduct near the intersection trying to take refuge from the heat when a vehicle rolled up and someone inside it opened fire. Williams was the only person struck by gunfire. He suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was taken to St. Bernard Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

August 1st


Samuel Coleman
20 years old
Police were called to the 12400 block of South Eggleston Avenue in the Far South Side's West Pullman neighborhood at about 12:30 p.m. where a had been shot in the neck and killed. There are no further details available.


Michael Chatman
22 years old
Reginald Riley
22 years old
Two men were killed and two others wounded early this morning in a drive-by shooting in the South Side's Stony Island Park neighborhood. At 2:39 a.m., four men, all in their 20s, were near a party at East 84th Street and South Euclid Avenue. One man was at the party, two were coming to the party by car and a fourth man was standing in the street talking with his girlfriend when a dark car drove past and shots rang out. Chatman was shot in the neck and later pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center. A second 22-year-old was shot multiple times and pronounced dead at Norwegian-American Hospital. The two others that were wounded are in stable condition.


July 31st


Aniya Crockett
2 years old
Crockett, of the 6800 block of South Wood Street, was found unresponsive while in the care of a relative who called the paramedics in her South Side home. An autopsy said that she died from multiple blunt force trauma resulting from child abuse. She was pronounced dead at Holy Cross Hospital at about noon Saturday. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services has opened an investigation into an allegation abuse against a friend of Aniya's mother's.


July 30th


Miguel Vasquez
21 years old
At about 11:55 p.m. two men were shot, one fatally, in the 4900 block of West School Street. They were sitting on a porch at this address when they began to argue with a suspect. The suspect fired shots at them before fleeing through a gangway into a vehicle in the alley. Vasquez, a resident of the School address, was pronounced dead at 12:53 a.m. at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center. He suffered a gunshot wound to his abdomen. The other man was shot in his right shoulder and is listed in stable condition.


Jeremy Johnson
23 years old
A man was found dead in an alley Friday in the West Garfield Park neighborhood at about 4:45 p.m. Police responded to calls of a person with head injuries down in an alley in the 4600 block of West Superior Street. Johnson had been shot multiple times at the above address and was dead on the scene.

After 9 weeks, just over two months of keeping documentation of the violence taking place in Chicago, there have been 94 homicides accounted for in the media. I have found an additional 4 that seem to have slipped through the cracks, bringing the total to at least 98. The total number of years of life lived that were abruptly ended by violence in Chicago so far this summer is 2,484. That makes the average age of the victims 26.4-years-old. With an average of 1.4 people killed everyday since Memorial Day.

If this sounds like a lot, it is a huge improvement over 1974, the worst year on record for Chicago homicides with a toll of 970 murders. That averages out to about 2.6 people killed a day.
